Kuantan, Pahang

MY MEMORIES IN KUANTAN AND PEKAN

Let me share this, We were in Pekan and Kuantan for few days. It's was hustle free town compared to Kuala Lumpur. We arrived in Kuantan on the 24  Dec. about 8pm checked into our Hotel that we booked online. As usual looked very impressive on line but when we walked in, it was not. Being late we decided to stay on and requested for an upgrade the next day.

Kuantan

Pekan

We had to travel very early in the morning to Pekan. We left Kuantan at 6.30am. The weather was cool and beautiful. There was almost no traffic, because it was the awakening day of Christmas....  The birds were just coming out of their homes to catch the late worms which were crawling back home after spending chritmas eve with all their friends.

It was almost 40 kilometers to Pekan. To my surprise, the road leading to Pekan was the most expensive road I can imagine because it had decorative center street lights throughout the whole stretch of 40 kilometers. It was amazing experience for me, specially it was still lighted up all along the road. I was enchanted with the beauty of the road and the the amazing cool county side.. Driving and cutting through the early morning fresh air.. the car was slicing the air in two and I could feel the separating air gushing both our windscreens... Another unique feature of this Kuantan Pekan highway was, it was well planed and it had u turn facilities every 5 kilometers, in case you miss a turn. A very memorable and pleasant drive.

Now for dinner , being vegetarians it is sometimes difficult to find a proper palce to eat. we decide to walk around instead of driving to look around for restaurants that serve vegetarian food even mamak stalls were ok for us. That's where we came across this Alif curry house along Jalan Mahkota. We walked in strait to see if they had any vegetarian food. To my surprise they had a separate counters for vegetarian and non vegetarian. They did have many varieties too, which we rarely find in most mamak restaurants. It was about 9pm and the shop was almost full...one look around there were Chinese, Malays and Indians having their dinner. What I noticed to my astonishment and surprise, most of them were having banana leaf rice with fried chicken, I suppose this is the speciality in Kuantan. We too had banana leaf vegetarian food and the service was prompt. The staff were friendly and the food was above average 8/10. So, vegetarians please note that this is one place you cannot miss.

This shot was taken after our food and the crowd had left.

2 day we decided to venture into Chinese vegetarian food in Kuantan....we drove around with the help of the GPS , we found this shop. It is located along Jalan Bukit Ubi.
We had butter prawns, actually made from flour,  veg. fish curry rice and tom yam mee. The butter prawns came in a big portion and were very crispy and delicious. The tom yam was also good the flavors were mild and not too spicy. The veg. Curry fish rice also was good. My verdict 9/10, looking for Chinese vegetarian food here is the place. Pobably there are also other places too. We were happy because it is not easy to find nice vegetarian restaurants.

Mr. Rama Rao.....brother inlaw from india

Am waiting anxiously for my guest today who will be spending 1 week with us. He is no other than my brother inlaw from India. Well. Must be wondering how come brother in law ......

Family bond or family unity ...., i do not know how to define it,,,but my late mother law, way back in the 1956 or 1957..visited India with her 3 children, her elder son who is my husband, her 2 daughter and her 9 months baby. Her brother in law, who was married for some years and no children...pleaded her to leave her baby with them....probably it would have torn her heart too..she kindly left her dear son and returned to Malaysia....the child grew with his new adopted parents and settled down there.

According to my father in law, they were a close knitted family and had strong ties with his brother and communicated through letters with his brother and son. He too grew up into a young man.... got married and has 3 children who are all now married.

Here he is now is now visiting his family for the first time....welcome bro in law..

Slice the veg.  fish marinate with pepper, salt  and some curry powder and deep fry. Slice some onions, sauté them with curry leaves and sliced serai add some lemon or lime juice and in the fried fish and give it a quick stir , dish out and here you are with this tasty dish....yes it's that simple but yummy....so enjoy trying it and ..don't forget to,leave your comments...

My helper

Come 23 rd of the month my helper will be 3 months with me. She is from India and married with 2 kids. On the first day when my agent whose is my brother in law brought her said she came with her husband who has also come to work in the estate. The thought.....oh my god this will be problem....sure .

2 weeks later she want s a day off to visit her husband who works somewhere in Kuala Selangor. WE told her this will not allowed. She may call n talk to him on the phone but no visiting.

Training her to accomodate to our way of life style ....first hygiene...her personal hygiene, house work. Many things around her are a cultural shock to her. Things like a microwave that are so common in most house hold was something new to her...ironing was a new chore for her.... Sweeping , moping, dusting she is able to handle but the fineness and neatness is not there. I am still trying to teach her....at times she follows ...but many times she will do it her  way. I've tried to close one eye .....than realised I have to teach and show her our expectations ....she may show her face at times when she has to redo her job but....hope she will understand my expectations.....and we will work togather with understanding...

This is my helper......

An act of kindness

Went for a wedding today.....indian wedding have always been so gala and colorful .....
Had to rush after my EHV class. For those who do not know about this classes they are everyday human values classes and I do some service to teach the children in my community. Wedding was in Air Panas, hubby and me not so sure of the venue....gods grace comes in many forms....let me relate what happened. I know Air Panas is in KL but sometimes it is no easy to locate the venue.....we got lost and stopped and asked a young biker at a petrol station. His reaction was...." Wait Aunty I'll come and show u and go off" , I was beyond words and thanked god or his kindness and this young man who showed us the way....who ever he is May he be blessed. A little act of kindness that deepens my faith in you dear god. Thank You always....

Andhra Mango Pickles

Today's project is marinating andhar mango pickles,

Pickles are a must in my house. Always used to get the ready made bottled pickles from the shops. However you will not find this authentic andhar mango pickles. Whenever any members of my family visit India, especially going to Andhara Pradesh, Visakapattanam we never return without these pickles. We can get a variety of them there.

So, today preparing pickles......

The credit goes to my dear amma because its from her that I picked up the receipe. The process is quite tedious. First you have to get green young mangoes, cut and marinated with salt with our weather  shinning one moment and cloudy the next. It took me a few days. It's now done and waiting to be stored. Hope tomorrow will be sunny also because need to sun the pickles and after about 2  weeks will be ready to be served. For now this is how it is.

Tea on a rainy afternoon

Tea  on a raining day.

Raining and dear hubby requested for Bajjis. Bajjis are the Malaysian gorengan like our  goreng  pisang. Only we use the Urud dhall flour ( tepung kacang kuda). Normally I would add some self rising flour so it gives the fluffiness and crunch. As I added water to make the batter I realized that it had a different texture. Naturally tasted....my Bajjis would be sweet instead of savory.  However, add some self rising flour to the batter and carried on to make the bajjis. This is how they turned out and my good hubby did not realize the difference . Probably he would have thought  another new receipe.  Thanks hubby dear and had our evening tea
